M'learned friend James, lecturing in Wisconsin, posts THIS example of university student writing on his blog.
Amanda's sure it's a foreign-language student, as even her 11-year-old students wouldn't hand in something that error-strewn.
But James assures me that English is, indeed, nominally their first language.
The things students come up with, eh? Rod and I keep meaning to make a list of the aberrant phrasings and locutions we encounter while marking essays.
The first and greatest on said list will remain the time when I asked my class to write a paragraph describing who they voted for and why.
One American, explaining why she and her family voted Republican, wrote, "It's the party for those who want to be free of thought."
Well, quite.
