Picadilly Circus

At the risk of turning into Alan Partridge (staving off his girlfriend's sexual ministrations by asking, "What do you think about the pedestrianisation of Norwich City Centre?"), I am intrigued at plans to remove the cars from Piccadilly Circus. I think this drawing looks directly up Regent Street, with Piccadilly on the left, and returns Eros to its historic location in the centre of the Circus.

The rejuvenation of Trafalgar Square through closing off the north road has been an undoubted success - it was so cool being there for the announcement of London winning the Olympics, and for a screening of Battleship Potemkin, with a new score performed live by the Pet Shop Boys.

The Piccadilly Circus change may or may not happen, but plans have been drawn up by the architects of Arsenal's new stadium, in a feasibility study. It might be part of wider developments called the 'Nash Ramblas' scheme.
