Directing a version of Hamlet (a flawed pirate copy published a year before Shakespeare's official one) this year, and have realised that most girls just don't have the experience of swordfighting.
Problem: my Hamlet is female, as is my Laertes. They have a final duel in the play.
Little boys mostly spend their childhood playing at guns, swords, wrestling, mock-fighting etc, and so when it comes to stagefighting, they have a basic idea of how to approach it.
It's really difficult to completely start from scratch. Rod convinced me that watching two girls fight would probably be more convincing than watching a girl fight a bloke. I hope that becomes true through rehearsal, because it's not at the moment.

should we be engaging Cecilie in mock swordplay, to prepare her for her future in the theatre? Would this give her the edge in auditions?
Somehow I think Cecilie is going to pick up swordfighting fairly naturally.
